Three Friends on the Beach: Sergey Sovkov (2024)

An intimate moment shared by three young men sunbathing on a sandy shore. Their sun-warmed skin glows in a palette of ochre, terracotta and deep amber, while their bodies fall into a relaxed, almost choreographed arrangement. With expressive pencil strokes and rich, earthy colour, Sergey Sovkov captures the contours of the male form — the definition of chests and thighs, the subtle play of light across the torso, and the unselfconscious sensuality of bodies at ease. There is a quiet eroticism in their closeness, yet nothing feels forced or posed. The scene conveys the simple pleasure of sunshine, companionship and being young.

The youthful male nude is a recurring subject in Sovkov’s figurative work. His work celebrates the human body with a distinctive combination of tenderness, vitality and sensuality. There is an unmistakable sense of innocence and joy in his depictions, an appreciation of male beauty that embraces both its physical presence and its vulnerability.

Born in 1972 in Kyshtym, Russia, Sovkov graduated from Togliatti State University before undertaking further training at the prestigious Repin Academic Institute of Fine Arts in St Petersburg.

His artistic life in Russia was complicated by restrictions affecting LGBTQ+ expression and the growing difficulties of exhibiting his work. In 2017, he relocated to Austria, where he could pursue his artistic practice away from an increasingly restrictive environment.

In this drawing, the male body is not merely an object of study, but a source of pleasure, connection and artistic expression. Sovkov invites us to look without embarrassment and to appreciate the beauty of the human form in all its warmth, freedom and quiet intimacy.
